Turfing large areas

Turfco has been successfully turfing large areas and establishing parklands, golf courses, acreage, ovals and erosion control sites throughout the Illawarra, Shoalhaven, South Coast, and Southern Highlands for over 35 years.

We offer two methods for establishing turf over larger areas including instant turf & sprig planting. Instant turf offers the quickest result for large areas with the lowest risk; however, our other option of sprig planting can deliver the same results, just over a longer period.

We have a variety of methods used to establish turf over larger areas being 2,000m2 and over, from instant turf through to sprig planting.

Instant turf is the quickest finish for large areas with the lowest risk, however our other options such as sprig planting can deliver the same result just over a longer period of time.

PREPARATION

Like any turfing job, correct area preparation is key to a lawn for life. All turfing methods require correct preparation. Turfco can offer services or recommend how to best prepare your large area to get the desired result whilst being cost-effective.

PLANTING METHODS

SPRIG PLANTING

Sprig planting is a cost-effective and efficient way of achieving a desirable and user-friendly large, grassed surface.

We have been planting our production paddocks in the Berry Region for over 25 years using this process.

We grow & sell warm-season turf varieties at Turfco, meaning our grasses can only be produced from stolons and rhizomes (runners), not seeds. To do this, we feed mature turf cuts of the desired turf variety into a Sprig Planting Machine where they are chopped up and periodically distributed into the soil. Afterwards, a roller is sent across the paddock to further embed the grass runners in the soil. The entire area is then irrigated, fertilised and very well cared for over the next few months.

These stolons and runners eventually grow laterally with a root system establishing down into the soil, which allows the turf to reach full maturity and fill an entire paddock. It’s at this point the paddock is ready for harvest and to become a lucky customer’s new lawn!

We can apply this same planting method for customers that require turf for large areas.

OVER PLANTING

If your existing field is tired or worn out and the time is not there for a rebuild, Turfco has a unique over planting machine that allows new turf to be planted into the area without taking the field out of action.

Over planting is a great alternative to a new field if time or budget is working against you.

SHOULD YOU SPRIG PLANT?

Sprig planting can be a cost-effective alternative when turfing large-scale areas.

However, with this lower cost, comes higher aftercare requirements for a longer period. Instant turf, as the name suggests, ensures you get an *almost* instant lawn, soon after it has been laid. Naturally, there will be a period of establishment for instant turf that requires constant care, ranging anywhere from 7 days to 18 weeks (depending on the time of year & turf variety).

Much like newly laid instant turf, an area that has been sprig planted requires constant care, however, for a much longer period: particularly methods of irrigation. The time it takes for the grass to reach complete ground cover using sprig planting can be up to 18 months (depending on the time of year & turf variety).

This is why this method of turfing is best suited to large-scale areas like golf courses or sports fields whose facilities generally have access to irrigation means to this scale and period of time.

SHOULD YOU USE INSTANT TURF?

If your yard is smaller than 5,000m2, we suggest laying instant turf. While a slightly higher cost upfront, instant turf ensures that you not only see results much sooner with less risk, but a shorter timeframe of rigorous aftercare demands.
