After 6 years of trials both here and in the US with Lawn Solutions Australia, we are pleased to announce an exciting new buffalo grass for release to the Australian market – Introducing Stampede Hybrid Buffalo.
Stampede Hybrid Buffalo is an interploid hybrid St. Augustinegrass (buffalograss; Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze). It was developed using embryo rescue technology through controlled pairwise crossing between a polyploid buffalograss (chromosome number: 2n = 2x = 30) and a diploid buffalograss (chromosome number: 2n = 2x = 18).
During trials, while cultivar performance varied across different sites, one consistently outperformed the rest, excelling in all key areas. Stampede Hybrid Buffalo Grass proved to be the best-performing cultivar during winter in some very cold and harsh environments, which is a crucial factor for many turf producers. Remarkably, Stampede remained unaffected by disease during the humid summer, whereas most other buffalo cultivars were impacted. Additionally, it boasted an impressive appearance and excellent harvest quality.
The next step in releasing this new grass to the market has involved stock expansion. When a new variety enters Australia through quarantine, LSA receive only a few runners of plant material to expand from for testing.
This year, LSA has set up propagation facilities for planting stock to be available to LSA foundation farms to expand and make the grass available for each member for planting. All the grass material supplied to LSA Members throughout this process has been expanded from these few pieces of trial stock that came through quarantine in 2022.
At the end of 2024, Turfco hand-planted over 3,000 Stampede Hybrid Buffalo runners at our farm in Jaspers Brush.
LSA engaged the services of the Australian Genetic Assurance Program (AusGAP) to monitor and enact protocols to ensure the purity of this selected variety every step of the way. As you can imagine, the process of creating a supply of a new variety of grass is slow and tedious, but it is pertinent to ensure the purity of the grass so that it performs as it has throughout trials.

Stampede Hybrid Buffalo offers excellent drought resistance, making it well suited to Australian conditions and periods of reduced rainfall. Its deep root system and efficient water use help it maintain health and colour for longer, while requiring less water than many other lawn types once established.

Stampede Hybrid Buffalo offers excellent shade tolerance, performing well in areas that receive as little as 25% direct sunlight (up to 75% shade). Its broad leaf structure helps maximise available sunlight, making it a great choice for backyards with trees, fencing or neighbouring buildings that limit sun exposure.

Like all buffalo grasses, Stampede is a relatively low-maintenance lawn. Its strong growth habit, excellent recovery and reduced vertical growth mean less effort is required to keep it looking its best. Regular mowing, fertilising and watering will help maintain a healthy, vibrant lawn year-round.

Stampede has been developed to handle the demands of modern family life. With excellent wear tolerance and strong recovery characteristics, it is well suited to active households, children, pets and entertaining areas where the lawn receives regular foot traffic.
Broad
Stampede features a soft, broad leaf texture that is comfortable underfoot and ideal for families. Its naturally dark green colour creates a lush, premium appearance while maintaining the soft feel buffalo grass is known for.
Stampede Hybrid Buffalo is a warm-season turf variety. All warm-season turf varieties will enter a state of dormancy when [soil] temperatures decrease consistently (winter period). Expect your lawn to lose colour during these months as the plant growth rate slows down.
The extent of winter dormancy (colour loss) will vary subject to location, the severity of winter & the turf variety.
For example, most coastal suburbs with healthy lawns will experience low levels of colour loss during a normal winter. However, all warm-season turf varieties will lose most, if not all, colour during the cooler months in the Southern Highlands and the ACT regions.

Once soil temperatures increase (generally mid-late spring), the plant growth rate will rise, and the lawn will return to its natural green state.
