The History of Zoysia Australis

Dr Brian Schwartz bred Zoysia Australis at the world-famous University of Georgia (UGA), Tifton Campus. Dr Schwartz is renowned as the scientist behind the release of the highly successful  TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda.

Zoysia Australis arrived in Australia in 2018 with a range of other elite Zoysia grasses. Zoysia Australis was selected for commercial release after extensive trials in a range of conditions and applications.

At Turfco, our first paddock of Zoysia Australis was planted in April 2022. We harvested our first roll of Zoysia Australis in the spring of 2023. A steady stream of orders and a growing popularity for our new premium turf variety has since followed. Zoysia Australis is exclusively available to Lawn Solutions Australia Turf Suppliers.

Shade Tolerance

Medium

Zoysia Australis flourishes in full sun situations. It has reasonable shade tolerance, accepting medium shaded areas. Zoysia Australis performs best with at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Maintenance

Maintenance

Low

Water: Zoysia Australis grows a deep root system that needs little water to thrive. During establishment, Zoysia Australis will require at least 2-3 daily water applications. Once established Zoysia Australis requires very minimal water inputs, only as signs show will an Australis require a deep soaking.

Watering Guide

Mowing: You can mow Zoysia Australis anywhere between 20-50mm in length. We encourage regular mowing to promote tight-knit, lateral growth; improving its wear tolerance, and resistance to weeds & pests. For best results, we suggest mowing Zoysia Australis 1-2 weeks in peak growing season.

Fertilising: Zoysia Australis was bred to require fewer inputs. We only recommend fertilising an Australis lawn twice a year: mid spring & again in late autumn. Application times can vary depending on your region. Fertilising isn’t necessarily required during the warmer months.

Leaf

Leaf

Medium

Zoysia Australis has a medium, blue/green leaf that is very soft underfoot. Its appearance offers a new alternative to grasses like Kikuyu. When it comes to the changing of the season and during dormancy Zoysia Australis can develop a beautiful red hue.

Winter Dormancy

Zoysia Australis is a warm-season turf variety. All warm-season turf varieties will enter a state of dormancy when [soil] temperatures decrease consistently (winter period). Expect your lawn to lose colour during these months as the plant growth rate slows down.

The extent of winter dormancy (colour loss) will vary subject to location, the severity of winter & the turf variety.

For example, most coastal suburbs with healthy lawns will experience low levels of colour loss during a normal winter. However, all warm-season turf varieties will lose most, if not all colour during the cooler months in the Southern Highlands and the ACT regions.

An application of Lawn Solutions ColourGuard Plus* will immediately restore a lush, green colour to your lawn. The product will give your lawn an instant green look and protect the grass by keeping the blade up to 2 degrees warmer.

*Apply to established lawns only.

Once soil temperatures increase (generally mid-late spring), the plant growth rate will rise, and the lawn will return to its natural green state.

FAQs

What type of grass is Australis?

Zoysia Australis is a part of the Zoysia Japonica family.

There are 3 main Zoysia turf types. Zoysia Matrella (e.g., Sir Grange Zoysia), Zoysia Macrantha (e.g., Nara Native Zoysia), Zoysia Japonica (e.g., Zoysia Australis).

How much shade can Zoysia Australis grass tolerate?

Zoysia Australis has reasonable shade tolerance, although it thrives in majority sun situations. Zoysia Australis needs at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day. Being relatively a new turfgrass to the Australian market, with time and further understanding, Zoysia Australis is expected to have a larger tolerance to shade.

Can you lay Australis grass in winter?

Yes, you can lay Australis at any time of the year. Just keep in mind that winter is the dormant period for a warm-season grass like Australis, so the establishment period will take longer than in the warmer months.

When is the best time of year to lay Australis?

As a warm-season turf variety, there are more ideal times of year to lay Zoysia Australis turf if you’re after the quickest establishment time. Any time after mid spring – early Autumn is a great time to lay Zoysia Australis for most regions as this is the peak growing period.

Does Australis grow from seed? / Can I buy Australis seed?

No. Like most warm-season turf varieties, Zoysia Australis is male & cannot be grown from seed. It can only be purchased in instant form. We plant our Zoysia Australis paddocks using a method called sprig planting, which involves methodically spreading chopped up pieces of mature instant turf cuts. With time & proper care, these turf “pieces” or runners eventually grow laterally to cover the entire paddock, ready for harvesting.

What will happen to my Australis lawn in winter?

Zoysia Australis is a warm-season turf variety, meaning these lawns will enter a state of dormancy in winter (possibly earlier in some regions) because of soil temperatures decreasing. The extent of winter dormancy will vary subject to location & the severity of winter. You’ll notice some colour loss & the growth of your Zoysia Australis lawn slowing down, meaning mowing will be very minimal during this period.

Is Zoysia Australis the right lawn for me?

Zoysia Australis is the perfect choice if you like something a little different, as Zoysia Australis is unlike anything else on the market! It has an eye-catching, beautiful, medium leaf: not as broad a Buffalo, but not as fine as a TifTuf or Sir Grange. It’s a fantastic alternative to common Kikuyu, with a much less invasive nature and lower maintenance requirements. Australis is great for busy backyards with moderate shade.

How is Zoysia Australis different to Sir Grange Zoysia?

Zoysia Australis is apart of the Zoysia Japonica family. Zoysia Australis is the best option for families who use their area frequently. It can stand up to daily stresses whilst still performing beautifully. It has a medium, dark green/blue blade. Sir Grange is also known as Zeon Zoysia and is a fine-bladed Zoysia Matrella. Sir Grange Zoysia is a premium low-maintenance option for a more sophisticated show garden or display area.

Is Zoysia Australis native to Australia?

No. Zoysia Australis was bred in the USA at the University of Georgia, Tifton Campus. Dr Brian Schwartz is the person responsible for creating another successful turf variation. His first success was TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda.

How can I make my Australis lawn greener?

Zoysia Australis will enter a level of dormancy (colour loss) during the winter months. To keep its green hue, you can use a product like ColourGuard Plus. This environmentally friendly liquid fertiliser contains a natural grass pigment, designed to give your lawn an instant lift. You can expect results to last up to 3 months after application.

Other ways to encourage a greener Australis lawn:

  • Regular mowing below 50mm to encourage lateral growth.
  • Dethatch your lawn yearly – in early spring for the best results.
  • Apply Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser to maintain healthy growth & appearance.
  • Apply a pre-emergent herbicide such as Lawn Solutions OxaFert in spring to prevent weeds from germinating.
  • Apply a post-emergent herbicide on visible weeds
  • Aerate your lawn yearly – between late spring & early summer to increase stronger growth.
What is the best grass for around a pool or by the ocean?

Zoysia grasses are generally known for their salt tolerance. Sir Grange Zoysia is a great choice for areas where salt water is a concern as it will remain unbothered by the exposure. While Sir Grange has a relatively high wear tolerance once established, consider the amount of wear & tear this area will experience. If the area will experience high levels of foot traffic, such as kids and pets, consider another salt-resistant, hardier grass like TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda or Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo.
