The History of Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo

Brent Redman is a second-generation turf farmer from the Hunter Valley NSW & the owner of Buchanan Turf Supplies. Brent began trialling different types of Buffalo grasses in the late 1980s. He noticed that a specific type of grass was growing better than the others and focused on maintaining this one. He named this grass Sir Walter, an acronym to reflect the qualities of the grass.

Sir, Winter, Active, Low Thatch, Environmentally, Responsible.

Sir Walter Buffalo grass was then produced across Australia and has become an iconic Aussie grass, both domestically & commercially. It’s no surprise, given its ability to grow in almost any environment, which is perfect for the Australian climate.

Winter Dormancy

Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo is a warm-season turf variety. All warm-season turf varieties will enter a state of dormancy when [soil] temperatures decrease consistently (winter period). Expect your lawn to lose colour during these months as the plant growth rate slows down.

The extent of winter dormancy (colour loss) will vary subject to location, the severity of winter & the turf variety.

For example, most coastal suburbs with healthy lawns will experience low levels of colour loss during a normal winter. However, all warm-season turf varieties will lose most, if not all colour during the cooler months in the Southern Highlands and the ACT regions.

An application of Lawn Solutions ColourGuard Plus* will immediately restore a lush, green colour to your lawn. The product will give both your lawn an instant green look and protect the grass by keeping the blade up to 2 degrees warmer.

*Apply to established lawns only.

Once soil temperatures increase (generally mid-late spring), the plant growth rate will rise, and the lawn will return to its natural green state.

FAQs

Is your Sir Walter the real Sir Walter DNA Certified?

Yes. As proud & devoted members of Lawn Solutions Australia, Turfco is a proud AusGAP-certified turf grower. This certification ensures that your DNA Certified Sir Walter adheres to the most stringent quality standards and will deliver the expected performance. You can rest assured that when you choose Turfco, you’re getting the real deal. Every Sir Walter turf purchase, big or small, will be issued with an Authenticity Certificate, which is your guarantee that you’re receiving genuine Sir Walter.

Is Sir Walter turf invasive?

Sir Walter Buffalo is a non-invasive turf variety, which means it won’t spread much beyond where it’s laid. Sir Walter only grows above-ground runners, making it easy to control while mowing. Invasiveness is further limited by a great maintenance regime. Frequent mowing, appropriate fertilisation and watering will encourage a healthy, strong & tight-knit lawn.

What does Sir Water ‘DNA Certified’ mean?

We grow premium turf varieties that are exclusive to Lawn Solutions Australia. Our Sir Walter turf is certified by AusGAP to prove that you’re getting the turf you’re paying for.

Can you lay Sir Walter grass in winter?

Yes, you can lay Sir Walter at any time of the year. Just keep in mind that winter is the dormant period for a warm-season grass like Sir Walter, so the establishment period will take longer than in the warmer months.

When is the best time of year to lay Sir Walter?

There are more ideal times of year to lay Sir Walter if you’re after the quickest establishment time. Any time after mid spring – early Autumn is a great time to lay Sir Walter for most regions as this is the peak growing period.

How does Sir Walter DNA Certified handle weeds?

When your Sir Walter lawn is healthy, it should grow densely enough that the root system will crowd out any weeds before they can get established. Frequent mowing will promote lateral growth which further aids weed resistance.

Does Sir Walter grow from seed? / Can I buy Sir Walter seed?

No. Sir Walter is male-sterile & cannot be grown from seed. Like most warm-season turf varieties, it can only be purchased in instant form. We plant our Sir Walter paddocks using a method called sprig planting, which involves methodically spreading chopped-up pieces of mature instant turf cuts. With time & proper care, these turf “pieces” or runners eventually grow laterally to cover the entire paddock, ready for harvesting.

What will happen to my Sir Walter lawn in winter?

Sir Walter is a warm-season turf variety, meaning these lawns will enter a state of dormancy in winter (possibly earlier in some regions) because of soil temperatures decreasing. The extent of winter dormancy will vary, subject to location & the severity of winter. You’ll notice some colour loss & the growth of your Sir Walter lawn slowing down, meaning mowing will be very minimal during this period.

Is Sir Walter the right lawn for me?

Sir Walter is the perfect choice if you like a broad leaf aesthetic. Sir Walter is ideal for both full sun & shaded areas. It’s our best-selling variety & a customer favourite for families & home lawns, especially with its soft leaf. Its versatility and durability make it suitable for a vast range of environments. Sir Walter is low-maintenance and our most shade-tolerant turf variety, so if shade is a major factor in your yard, Sir Walter is the lawn for you!

How can I make my Sir Walter lawn greener?
  • Sir Walter will enter a level of dormancy (colour loss) during the winter months. To keep its dark green hue, you can use a product like ColourGuard Plus. This environmentally friendly liquid fertiliser contains a natural grass pigment, designed to give your lawn an instant lift. You can expect results to last up to 3 months after application.
  • Other ways to encourage a greener Sir Walter lawn:
  • Regular mowing below 40mm to encourage lateral growth.
  • Dethatch your lawn yearly – in early spring for the best results. Remember, don’t go too low when dethatching Buffalo lawns.
  • Apply Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser to maintain healthy growth & appearance.
  • Apply a pre-emergent herbicide such as Lawn Solutions OxaFert in spring to prevent weeds from germinating.
  • Apply a post-emergent herbicide on visible weeds
  • Aerate your lawn yearly – between late spring & early summer to increase stronger growth.
Which is the best Buffalo grass?

All Buffalo grasses typically have a dark green colour, high shade & drought tolerance, and great wear tolerance. Buffalo grasses can photosynthesise better than other turf varieties as the broad leaves allow for exposure to more sunlight.

Not all Buffalo grasses are identical. Each has its own unique qualities. In general, they’re all adaptable and grow well in a wide variety of growing conditions.

Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo is the best Buffalo grass on the market:

  • It’s DNA Certified: Sir Walter DNA Certified is a specific strain of buffalo grass that has been carefully selected and tested to ensure genetic purity and quality. The DNA certification guarantees that the grass you receive is authentic and meets strict standards.
  • Adaptable: It can thrive in both hot and cold regions and has good shade tolerance, making it suitable for a wide range of environments.
  • Drought-tolerant: It has deep root systems that help it access water from deeper soil layers, making it more resilient during dry spells
  • Low maintenance: It requires less watering, fertilising, and mowing, making it an attractive choice for homeowners seeking a low-maintenance lawn.
  • Soft texture & aesthetic appeal: Soft to the touch, providing a comfortable lawn surface for walking and playing. It has a vibrant green colour and forms a dense, lush turf, enhancing the overall visual appeal of the lawn.
  • Weed & pest resistant: Its dense growth habit also helps to suppress weed growth.
  • Established reputation: Sir Walter DNA Certified has been available in the Australian market for many years and has gained a strong reputation for its performance and durability. It has been extensively tested and is supported by a national network of licensed growers and suppliers.
What is the best grass for allergies?

All our turf varieties are low-allergenic. Grasses that have runners (stolons) produce less seed & pollen and are friendlier to allergies. These types of grasses are usually warm-season and are already a great choice for Australian homes. When cared for properly, warm-season grasses produce very few seeds, if any at all. They include:

  • Buffalo (like Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo).
  • Couch (like TifTuf).
  • Zoysia (like Zoysia Australis and Sir Grange Zoysia).
  • Kikuyu (like Eureka Kikuyu).
What is the best grass for around a pool or by the ocean?

Buffalo grasses have a good tolerance of salinity & make for a great option in coastal areas. Sir Grange Zoysia, Zoysia Australis & TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda are also suitable options for coastal homes or by pool areas.
