Sir Grange turf image

Sir Grange is a stunning, non-invasive turf variety that requires very little maintenance once established. It’s suitable for full sun & partly shaded areas and is the perfect choice for those looking for a showpiece home lawn that encounters low levels of traffic.

  • Very high shade tolerance (min. 3 hours of direct sunlight/day once established)
  • Extremely low maintenance – up to 50% less mowing than other common turf varieties – the ’no mow grass’
  • Slow growing & looks fantastic at a wide range of heights
  • Handles full sun situations very well

(Please note, we recommend installing Sir Grange Zoysia on 100 – 200mm of 100% washed-river sand, or at least 80% sand to 20% organic, nutrient-rich material. Avoid using heavy soil or compost mixtures. You should always break down hard, existing ground prior to spreading this turf underlay).

The History of Sir Grange Zoysia

Sir Grange is a fine-bladed Zoysia Matrella that was hand selected from over 10,000 different turf cultivar varieties. It was developed from one of the largest turf grass breeding programs in the world, by one of the world’s leading turfgrass breeders, Mr David Douget from Blade Runner Farms (BRF) Texas, USA. Sir Grange Zoysia was originally developed for the golf industry but its popularity quickly spread to the residential market, with its many great qualities making it the perfect choice for a home lawn. Sir Grange has since become the #1selling Zoysia grass in the United States.

Sir Grange is now making a name for itself both domestically & commercially here in Australia thanks to its exceptional qualities. Sir Grange is exclusively available to Lawn Solutions Australia Turf Suppliers.

Maintenance

Maintenance

Very Low

Water: Sir Grange requires much less water than other turf varieties once established. An established Sir Grange lawn will only need water if it looks dry or conditions are extreme.

Although, during its establishment period, Sir Grange will require approximately 2-3 daily water applications. Being a slow growing variety, this establishment period can be up to 18 weeks in warm growing conditions. It’s recommended to install an automatic irrigation system to ensure these water requirements are met during establishment.

Watering Guide

Mowing: You can mow Sir Grange anywhere between 10-50mm in length or leave it completely unmown, depending on aesthetic preference.

Sir Grange is very slow growing and can be mown at a range of heights. It requires half the mowing of traditional warm season grasses. Even after several years of unmown, Sir Grange will not grow higher than about 30cm.

If kept on the shorter side, regular mowing is still encouraged in peak growing season as this will promote tight-knit, lateral growth; increasing Sir Grange’s wear tolerance and weed & pest resistance.

Fertilising: Sir Grange has been selectively bred to require much less nutrients than traditional warm season grasses. Sir Grange needs about one-third of the fertiliser used on traditional lawns. Two applications per year is plenty: fertilise between early spring and mid to late summer if required/sign show. Application times can vary depending on your region.

Wear

Wear

Medium

Sir Grange has a reasonable wear tolerance despite its relatively slow growth because of its dense growth habit & strong rhizome system. Its wear tolerance will increase with maturity and root depth. However, we recommend a Sir Grange lawn for low to moderately active areas. Yards with pets & frequent, high foot traffic should consider a faster growing turf variety.

Leaf

Leaf

Fine

Sir Grange has a fine, dark green blade, with a dense & non-invasive growth habit. Its naturally manicured aesthetic offers a clean and striking appearance at a variety of heights. The Sir Grange leaf is robust yet soft to touch, making it a pleasure to walk across.

Winter Dormancy

Sir Grange Zoysia is a warm-season turf variety. All warm-season turf varieties will enter a state of dormancy when [soil] temperatures decrease consistently (winter period). Expect your lawn to lose colour during these months as the plant growth rate slows down.

The extent of winter dormancy (colour loss) will vary subject to location, the severity of winter & the turf variety.

For example, most coastal suburbs with healthy lawns will experience low levels of colour loss during a normal winter. However, all warm-season turf varieties will lose most, if not all colour during the cooler months in the Southern Highlands and the ACT regions.

An application of Lawn Solutions ColourGuard Plus* will immediately restore a lush, green colour to your lawn. The product will give your lawn an instant green look and protect the grass by keeping the blade up to 2 degrees warmer.

*Apply to established lawns only.

Once soil temperatures increase (generally mid-late spring), the plant growth rate will rise, and the lawn will return to its natural green state.

FAQs

What type of grass is Sir Grange?

Sir Grange is a fine, soft, dark green-leafed Zoysia grass. Sir Grange is non-allergenic & highly weed and pest-resistant due to its dense root system.

Is Sir Grange turf invasive?

Sir Grange is so slow-growing that it requires extremely low maintenance and will not invade garden beds. A great maintenance regime further limits invasiveness. Frequent mowing, appropriate fertilisation and watering will encourage a healthy, strong & tight-knit lawn.

How much water does Sir Grange need?

Sir Grange requires much less water than other turf varieties once established. An established Sir Grange lawn will only need water if it looks dry or conditions are extreme. However, during its establishment period, Sir Grange will require approximately 2-3 daily water applications. Being a slow-growing variety, this establishment period can be up to 18 weeks in warm growing conditions. Installing an automatic irrigation system is recommended to ensure these water requirements are met during establishment.

How much shade can Sir Grange tolerate?

Sir Grange has excellent shade tolerance once established. It thrives in both full sun & partly shaded areas. Once established, Sir Grange only requires a minimum of 3 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Does Sir Grange grow from seed? / Can I buy Sir Grange seed?

No. Like most warm-season turf varieties, Sir Grange is male & cannot be grown from seed. It can only be purchased in instant form. We plant our Sir Grange paddocks using a method called sprig planting, which involves methodically spreading chopped up pieces of mature instant turf cuts. With time & proper care, these turf “pieces” or runners eventually grow laterally to cover the entire paddock, ready for harvesting.

Can you lay Sir Grange grass in winter?

Yes, you can lay Sir Grange at any time of the year in most regions. Just keep in mind that winter is the dormant period for a warm-season grass like Sir Grange, so the establishment period will take longer than in the warmer months. Sir Grange is naturally a very slow-growing turf variety, so it’s preferred to install this type of turf when the growth rate is at its highest – late spring & summer for most regions.

When is the best time of year to lay Sir Grange?

As a warm-season turf variety, there are more ideal times of year to lay Sir Grange turf if you’re after the quickest establishment time. Any time after mid-spring to early Autumn is a great time to lay Sir Grange for most regions, as this period is the peak growing time.

Sir Grange can take up to 18 weeks to establish in warm growing conditions.

Will dog urine kill my Sir Grange grass?

We don’t recommend a Sir Grange lawn for dog owners. Since Sir Grange Zoysia is slow to repair, having a dog in your yard will likely result in damage from its urine burns.

If there are instances when a dog urinates on your lawn, there are a few measures you can implement:

  • Flush the area of lawn with plenty of water after your dog has peed to dilute the effects of the urine.
  • Frequent shallow watering of your lawn can also help reduce the nitrogen and salt overload from dog urine.
  • Buy some Dog Rocks from the pet store and put them in your dog’s water bowl. These work by filtering out the impurities that burn your lawn.
What will happen to my Sir Grange lawn in winter?

Sir Grange is a warm-season turf variety, meaning these lawns will enter a state of dormancy in winter (possibly earlier in some regions) because of soil temperatures decreasing. The extent of winter dormancy will vary, subject to location & the severity of winter. You’ll notice some colour loss & the growth of your Sir Grange lawn slowing down, meaning mowing will be very minimal during this period.

Is Sir Grange the right lawn for me?

Sir Grange is the perfect choice if you like a luxurious, fine-leaf look. Sir Grange is suitable for full sun & partly shaded areas and is a great choice for those looking for a showpiece home lawn that encounters low levels of traffic. Sir Grange will thrive if you don’t intend for dogs to regularly use the area. An installed irrigation system is preferred for this turf variety.

How can I make my Sir Grange lawn greener?

Sir Grange will enter a level of dormancy (colour loss) during the winter months. To keep its dark green hue, you can use a product like Lawn Solutions ColourGuard Plus. This environmentally friendly liquid fertiliser contains a natural grass pigment, designed to give your lawn an instant lift. You can expect results to last up to 3 months after application.

Other ways to encourage a greener Sir Grange lawn:

  • Regular mowing (if you’re keeping your Sir Grange lawn short) to encourage lateral growth.
  • Dethatch your lawn yearly – in early spring for the best results.
  • Apply Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser to maintain healthy growth & appearance.
  • Apply a pre-emergent herbicide such as Lawn Solutions OxaFert in spring to prevent weeds from germinating.
  • Apply a post-emergent herbicide on visible weeds
  • Aerate your lawn yearly – between late spring & early summer to increase stronger growth.
What is the best grass for around a pool or by the ocean?

Zoysia grasses are generally known for their salt tolerance. Sir Grange Zoysia, TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda & Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo grass are all suitable options to lay in coastal locations or by a pool area.
