Drought Resistance

Drought Resistance

Medium

Eureka Kikuyu has a moderate drought resistance but inherently is a thirsty grass. Kikuyu remains a robust performer and will retain its colour well. Through drought periods, Kikuyu will need regular watering to thrive. Kikuyu relies on frequent watering both during and post establishment to sustain itself.

Shade Tolerance

Shade Tolerance

Very Low

Kikuyu performs best in full sun areas. Kikuyu isn’t regarded as a highly shade tolerant grass and thrives in plenty of direct sunlight. Kikuyu can tolerate areas of low light, but still requires at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Maintenance

Maintenance

Very High

Water: Kikuyu requires regular increments of watering. An adequate watering regime is crucial for the grass to succeed. During the warmer months, deep watering every 7-10 days is recommended. During establishment, Eureka Kikuyu will require at least 2-3 daily water applications.

Watering Guide

Mowing: You can mow Eureka Kikuyu anywhere between 30-50mm in length. We encourage regular mowing to thicken the Kikuyu & keep the lawn looking attractive. It’s essential to mow Eureka Kikuyu at least weekly in peak growing season.

Fertilising: We recommend fertilising a Kikuyu lawn at least 2-3 times a year. Important dates are late spring, mid to late summer and late autumn. Application times can vary depending on your region.

Wear

Wear

High

Eureka Kikuyu offers high wear tolerance, but this is achieved mainly through its rapid recovery capability as damaged areas regrow fast during the warmer months. With regular mowing, Eureka Kikuyu forms a dense and tightly woven growth mat and can maintain its colour reasonably well into the cooler months.

Leaf

Leaf

Medium

Eureka Kikuyu blades are approximately 4–5mm wide and 25–40mm long and are bright yellow–green colour. It holds its colour well into winter. Kikuyu will brown off when frost affected but bounces back with full vigour in spring.

Winter Dormancy

Eureka Kikuyu is a warm-season turf variety. All warm-season turf varieties will enter a state of dormancy when [soil] temperatures decrease consistently (winter period). Expect your lawn to lose colour during these months as the plant growth rate slows down.

The extent of winter dormancy (colour loss) will vary subject to location, the severity of winter & the turf variety.

For example, most coastal suburbs with healthy lawns will experience low levels of colour loss during a normal winter. However, all warm-season turf varieties will lose most, if not all colour during the cooler months in the Southern Highlands and the ACT regions.

An application of Lawn Solutions ColourGuard Plus* will immediately restore a lush, green colour to your lawn. The product will give your lawn an instant green look and protect the grass by keeping the blade up to 2 degrees warmer.

*Apply to established lawns only.

Once soil temperatures increase (generally mid-late spring), the plant growth rate will rise, and the lawn will return to its natural green state.

FAQs

Is Eureka Kikuyu good in the shade?

Eureka Kikuyu prefers full sun, but it can tolerate lightly shaded areas. If the area receives at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day, Kikuyu will thrive.

How to stop Kikuyu grass from spreading?

Kikuyu is naturally a very rapid-growing & invasive grass. Its aggressive growth habit can result in regular runners entering surrounding garden beds and pathways. For this reason, Kikuyu can act as a weed and will require regular maintenance to control its invasive behaviour.

Regular mowing & whipper-snipping edges are the best & easiest ways to stop Kikuyu from spreading. If any runners take over, the best course of action is to:

  • Remove it by hand: If the invaded area is relatively small, all you need is to carefully pull the runners out by hand or cut them off using a spade.
  • Use a non-selective herbicide: Applying a non-selective herbicide (like Round-Up) will be effective in removing runners and unwanted patches of grass. Use a weed wand or a paintbrush for the application to ensure precision. Invasive grasses like Kikuyu grow tall quickly, so the best time to remove runners is when there’s a bit of length to the lawn.
How to thicken Kikuyu grass?

If you notice your Kikuyu lawn lacking in thickness, you want to first look at your mowing habits.

  • Mow regularly to suppress upright growth and promote lateral growth.
  • Mow in different directions to help encourage the grass to stand straight up.
  • Keep your mowing length short to improve turf density. Your Kikuyu will learn to grow thicker with more lateral growth. Remember never to remove more than of the leaf blade!

In addition to mowing, you can improve the turf density of your Kikuyu lawn with a combination of healthy lawn practices. This includes fertilising, watering as needed (when the grass shows signs), and dethatching (to improve nutrient absorption).

Can you lay Kikuyu grass in winter?

Yes, you can lay Kikuyu at any time of the year. Just keep in mind that winter is the dormant period for a warm-season grass like Kikuyu, so the establishment period will take longer than in the warmer months.

When is the best time of year to lay Eureka Kikuyu?

As a warm-season turf variety, there are more ideal times of year to lay Kikuyu turf if you’re after the quickest establishment time. Any time after mid-spring – early Autumn is a great time to lay Kikuyu for most regions as this is the peak growing period.

How often should you water Eureka Kikuyu grass?

Once established, Kikuyu requires regular increments of watering. An adequate watering regime is crucial for the grass to succeed. During the warmer months, deep watering every 7-10 days is recommended. During establishment, Eureka Kikuyu will require at least 2-3 daily water applications.

What will happen to my Kikuyu lawn in winter?

Eureka Kikuyu is a warm-season turf variety, meaning these lawns will enter a state of dormancy in winter (possibly earlier in some regions) because of soil temperatures decreasing. The extent of winter dormancy will vary subject to location & the severity of winter. You’ll notice some colour loss & the growth of your Eureka Kikuyu lawn slowing down, meaning mowing will be very minimal during this period.

Is Kikuyu the right lawn for me?

Kikuyu is an affordable turf option, & if your area receives full sun, it will recover well from high traffic environments. However, Kikuyu requires a lot of maintenance even after establishment. If you’re after a cost-effective lawn for your full sun backyard and you don’t mind putting in the time to maintain your lawn, Kikuyu is the grass for you!

How can I make my Kikuyu lawn greener?

Kikuyu will enter a level of dormancy (colour loss) during the winter months. To keep its dark green hue, you can use a product like ColourGuard Plus. This environmentally friendly liquid fertiliser contains a natural grass pigment, designed to give your lawn an instant lift. You can expect results to last up to 3 months after application.

Other ways to encourage a greener Kikuyu lawn:

  • Regular mowing below 50mm to encourage lateral growth.
  • Dethatch your lawn yearly – in early spring for the best results.
  • Apply Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser to maintain healthy growth & appearance.
  • Apply a pre-emergent herbicide such as Lawn Solutions OxaFert in spring to prevent weeds from germinating.
  • Apply a post-emergent herbicide on visible weeds
  • Aerate your lawn yearly – between late spring & early summer to increase stronger growth.
