The History of TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda

TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda went through almost 25 years of research and development from one of the world’s leading turf-grass breeders, the University of Georgia (UGA) before its release to the Australian market. TifTuf was hand-selected out of 27,700 different Bermuda varieties for its superior qualities.

TifTuf was first bred in 1992 by Wayne Hanna at UGA’s TifTon Campus. In 2009, Dr Brian Schwartz joined the research program to conduct more rigorous scientific testing. In this program, TifTuf was among an array of 20-30 turfgrasses. Over the next 5-6 years Dr Brian Schwartz endeavoured to find the best turfgrass within this group.

Researching & developing drought tolerant vegetation was of high importance to the U.S.A. at the time, and TifTuf consistently proved to be a high performer across most traits but especially in the drought \ trials.

Along with all turfgrasses produced out of the TifTon Campus, the title for the new breed combined the ‘TIF’ in TifTon, with ‘TUF’ due to the remarkable durability and you guessed it, toughness of the turf.

Drought Resistance

Very High

TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda is known for its superior drought tolerance. Shade Tolerance

Medium

TifTuf performs best in full sun and lightly shaded situations. Although  TifTuf is not regarded as a highly shade tolerant grass, it is much more tolerant than comparable Couch grasses. TifTuf can withstand areas of low light, only requiring 4-5 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Maintenance

Water: TifTuf grows a deep root system that needs little water to thrive. During its establishment period, TifTuf will require approximately 2-3 daily water applications. This variety can be established with a fraction of the water that most other varieties require. Part of this is due to its rapidly establishing root system that can see it take root in less than 7 days, which can be up to 75% quicker than other varieties. Once established, TifTuf requires very minimal water inputs to maintain its green appearance.

Watering Guide

Mowing: You can mow TifTuf anywhere between 9-36mm in length. TifTuf grows very quickly so we encourage regular mowing, particularly in peak
season. Frequent mowing will promote tight-knit, lateral growth; further improving TifTuf’s wear tolerance and it’s weed & pest resistance.

Fertilising: TifTuf has been bred to require fewer nutrient inputs. We recommend fertilising a TifTuf lawn approximately twice a year. Important dates are late spring, and late autumn. Application times can vary depending on your region.

Leaf

Fine

TifTuf has a fine blade, deep green in colour with dense growth habit that produces a soft leaf to walk on and yet can handle high wear situations. TifTuf is a great looking all-round lawn that is well-liked for its ability to maintain its colour in extreme temperatures, making it a popular choice for homeowners in hot climates.

Winter Dormancy

TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda is a warm-season turf variety. All warm-season turf varieties will enter a state of dormancy when [soil] temperatures decrease consistently (winter period). Expect your lawn to lose colour during these months as the plant growth rate slows down.

The extent of winter dormancy (colour loss) will vary subject to location, the severity of winter & the turf variety.

For example, most coastal suburbs with healthy lawns will experience low levels of colour loss during a normal winter. However, all warm-season turf varieties will lose most, if not all colour during the cooler months in the Southern Highlands and the ACT regions.

An application of Lawn Solutions ColourGuard Plus* will immediately restore a lush, green colour to your lawn. The product will give both your lawn an instant green look and protect the grass by keeping the blade up to 2 degrees warmer.

*Apply to established lawns only.

Once soil temperatures increase (generally mid-late spring), the plant growth rate will rise, and the lawn will return to its natural green state.
