The History of TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda

TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda went through almost 25 years of research and development from one of the world’s leading turf-grass breeders, the University of Georgia (UGA) before its release to the Australian market. TifTuf was hand-selected out of 27,700 different Bermuda varieties for its superior qualities.

TifTuf was first bred in 1992 by Wayne Hanna at UGA’s TifTon Campus. In 2009, Dr Brian Schwartz joined the research program to conduct more rigorous scientific testing. In this program, TifTuf was among an array of 20-30 turfgrasses. Over the next 5-6 years Dr Brian Schwartz endeavoured to find the best turfgrass within this group.

Researching & developing drought tolerant vegetation was of high importance to the U.S.A. at the time, and TifTuf consistently proved to be a high performer across most traits but especially in the drought \ trials.

Along with all turfgrasses produced out of the TifTon Campus, the title for the new breed combined the ‘TIF’ in TifTon, with ‘TUF’ due to the remarkable durability and you guessed it, toughness of the turf.

Shade Tolerance

Medium

TifTuf performs best in full sun and lightly shaded situations. Although  TifTuf is not regarded as a highly shade tolerant grass, it is much more tolerant than comparable Couch grasses. TifTuf can withstand areas of low light, only requiring 4-5 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Maintenance

Medium

Water: TifTuf grows a deep root system that needs little water to thrive. During its establishment period, TifTuf will require approximately 2-3 daily water applications. This variety can be established with a fraction of the water that most other varieties require. Part of this is due to its rapidly establishing root system that can see it take root in less than 7 days, which can be up to 75% quicker than other varieties. Once established, TifTuf requires very minimal water inputs to maintain its green appearance.

Watering Guide

Mowing: You can mow TifTuf anywhere between 9-36mm in length. TifTuf grows very quickly so we encourage regular mowing, particularly in peak
season. Frequent mowing will promote tight-knit, lateral growth; further improving TifTuf’s wear tolerance and it’s weed & pest resistance.

Fertilising: TifTuf has been bred to require fewer nutrient inputs. We recommend fertilising a TifTuf lawn approximately twice a year. Important dates are late spring, and late autumn. Application times can vary depending on your region.

Leaf

Fine

TifTuf has a fine blade, deep green in colour with dense growth habit that produces a soft leaf to walk on and yet can handle high wear situations. TifTuf is a great looking all-round lawn that is well-liked for its ability to maintain its colour in extreme temperatures, making it a popular choice for homeowners in hot climates.

Winter Dormancy

TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda is a warm-season turf variety. All warm-season turf varieties will enter a state of dormancy when [soil] temperatures decrease consistently (winter period). Expect your lawn to lose colour during these months as the plant growth rate slows down.

The extent of winter dormancy (colour loss) will vary subject to location, the severity of winter & the turf variety.

For example, most coastal suburbs with healthy lawns will experience low levels of colour loss during a normal winter. However, all warm-season turf varieties will lose most, if not all colour during the cooler months in the Southern Highlands and the ACT regions.

An application of Lawn Solutions ColourGuard Plus* will immediately restore a lush, green colour to your lawn. The product will give both your lawn an instant green look and protect the grass by keeping the blade up to 2 degrees warmer.

*Apply to established lawns only.

Once soil temperatures increase (generally mid-late spring), the plant growth rate will rise, and the lawn will return to its natural green state.

FAQs

What type of grass is TifTuf?

TifTuf is a Hybrid Bermuda and is the world’s first turf type to be Smart Drop Certified (formerly Smart Approved WaterMark). It was bred to stand up to drought-tolerant conditions and the tough Australian climate.

Is Bermuda the same as Couch?

TifTuf is known as a Bermuda grass in the United States, but is commonly known as a Couch grass here in Australia – although TifTuf is unlike any other Couch grass, in the best way possible! A warm-season turf grass, TifTuf is drought-tolerant and resilient. Couch grass thrives in full sun areas and has a strong horizontal growth pattern. This means it can tolerate very low mowing heights. The aggressive growth habit of any couch makes it durable under stress while enabling it to self-repair. This makes couch turf suitable for large areas such as golf courses, football fields, and public open space environments like parks and playgrounds. While standard couch varieties need at least 5-6 hours of direct sunlight per day, TifTuf Bermuda is shade-tolerant and can survive on as little as 4 hours of direct sunlight per day.

How does TifTuf cope in summer?

TifTuf is the most shade-tolerant out of the Couch family, only needing at least 4-5 hours of direct sunlight per day. Due to its high drought tolerance, TifTuf is proven to withstand the harsh Australian heat and drought, requiring little water to maintain its green colour & health.

Is TifTuf turf invasive?

TifTuf can have the tendency to be an invasive grass variety and will require regular mowing to ensure that the length of the blade is kept under control. Trimming the edges will be required on a regular basis to prevent the spread.

How much shade can TifTuf grass tolerate?

TifTuf is shade-tolerant for a Couch grass, although it thrives in the majority of sun situations. TifTuf needs at least 4-5 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Can you lay TifTuf grass in winter?

Yes, you can lay TifTuf at any time of the year. Just keep in mind that winter is the dormant period for a warm-season grass like TifTuf, so the establishment period will take longer than in the warmer months.

When is the best time of year to lay TifTuf?

There are more ideal times of year to lay TifTuf if you’re after the quickest establishment time. Any time after mid-spring to early Autumn is a great time to lay TifTuf for most regions, as this is the peak growing period.

Does TifTuf grow from seed? / Can I buy TifTuf seed?

No. Like most warm-season turf varieties, TifTuf is male & cannot be grown from seed. It can only be purchased in instant form. We plant our TifTuf paddocks using a method called sprig planting, which involves methodically spreading chopped-up pieces of mature instant turf cuts. With time & proper care, these turf “pieces” or runners eventually grow laterally to cover the entire paddock, ready for harvesting.

What will happen to my TifTuf lawn in winter?

TifTuf is a warm-season turf variety, meaning these lawns will enter a state of dormancy in winter (possibly earlier in some regions) because of soil temperatures decreasing. The extent of winter dormancy will vary, subject to location & the severity of winter. You’ll notice some colour loss & the growth of your TifTuf lawn slowing down, meaning mowing will be very minimal during this period.

Is TifTuf the right lawn for me?

TifTuf works well in a variety of applications and is the perfect choice if you like the fine-leaf look. TifTuf is a great performer in full-sun, high-wear areas like busy backyards, sports fields, golf courses and many commercial spaces. It’s a great option for those looking for a lawn that can withstand extreme temperatures and high traffic while maintaining a beautiful green appearance. And it is a great way to save money on your water bill! TifTuf has been formally recognised for its excellence in drought tolerance, the first and only turfgrass in Australia and the world to receive the Smart Drop Certified (previously known as Smart Approved WaterMark).

What is the Smart Approved WaterMark?

The Smart Drop Certification program independently certifies water-efficient products and services in Australia. The label helps consumers to shop wisely and provides a market advantage for businesses.

After many years of extensive independent testing and research, TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda is the first and only turf grass to be awarded the Smart Approved WaterMark for drought tolerance in Australia or anywhere in the world. If you’re after a lawn that will save you water and money, TifTuf is the perfect choice. TifTuf can withstand extended periods without irrigation when necessary.

How can I make my TifTuf lawn greener?

TifTuf tends to maintain its vibrancy longer than other turf types, but it will enter a level of dormancy (colour loss) during the winter months. To keep its dark green hue, you can use a product like ColourGuard Plus. This environmentally friendly liquid fertiliser contains a natural grass pigment, designed to give your lawn an instant lift. You can expect results to last up to 3 months after application.

Other ways to encourage a greener TifTuf lawn:

  • Regular mowing below 25mm to encourage lateral growth.
  • Dethatch your lawn yearly – in early spring for the best results.
  • Apply Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser to maintain healthy growth & appearance.
  • Apply a pre-emergent herbicide such as Lawn Solutions OxaFert in spring to prevent weeds from germinating.
  • Apply a post-emergent herbicide on visible weeds
  • Aerate your lawn yearly – between late spring & early summer to increase stronger growth.
How does TifTuf handle frost?

TifTuf is a warm-season turf variety. That means it thrives during the warmer months and tends to go dormant (colour loss) during winter and in cooler climates. However, TifTuf shows improved cold tolerance compared to other Couch grasses, making it more resistant to winter browning. In regions with mild winters, TifTuf will retain its green colour for a more extended period. You can expect it to experience some dormancy in places with colder winters (E.g., Southern Highlands, ACT, etc). Despite that, TifTuf’s winter colour retention is relatively better compared to some other warm-season grasses. While TifTuf may lose a little colour during colder periods, this is very typical for warm-season grasses. It is important to note that TifTuf tends to retain its colour for a longer period than other grass varieties, making it more attractive during the transition seasons.

TifTuf is a robust, self-repairing grass, meaning it has one of the fastest recovery rates when it comes to damage compared to other grasses, including frost.

What is the best grass for around a pool or by the ocean?

TifTuf is the best choice when it comes to turfing your pool area, being salt-resistant. TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda will remain green throughout the hot summer months and will withstand the heavy wear & tear of pool attendees. Sir Grange Zoysia, Zoysia Australis & Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo grass are all suitable options to lay in coastal locations or by a pool area.
