With school holidays fast approaching there’s no better time than now to get prepared for lots of fun activities that involve the whole family. So why not make the most out of your lawn over the summer break and keep everyone entertained.
We have some ideas of fun ways to make the most out of your lawn this holiday season.
Lawn Twister

Everybody loves a game of twister. If you’re not too concerned, you can paint the circles onto your lawn directly and keep them there until they get mowed out. This way they’re ready to be used at any time!
Otherwise, you can use some coloured paper plates to play.
This is great for hours of fun and you can relax knowing the soft grass will catch anyone who falls over.
Outdoor movie night
There is nothing better than having a movie night, but during summer why not embrace the warm evenings outdoors. Get a bunch of friends together, or even just the family and choose your favourite movie for a fun night out in the backyard.
Now that you can buy a portable phone projector this doesn’t have to be a big expense. Grab a couple of bean bags and lots of snacks and you’ll have your night of entertainment sorted.
PS: don’t forget the repellent as the flies and mozzies can be the only downside to an outdoor movie night!
Cricket
Bring out your competitive side with a game of “friendly” backyard cricket. Every family has their own style of backyard cricket so get the wickets set up ready for when the inspiration to play hits.
The best thing about backyard cricket is that you really only need the bat and the ball. You can make the wickets out of just about anything; chalk on the fence, a clothesline, the bin, etc. This makes it a convenient and affordable way for the whole family to get together and get outdoors.
Yard Games
What about some old schoolyard games? When you have a great backyard, you might as well use it! These games are so much fun and can be enjoyed by everyone, young and old.
Garden Quoits/Ring Toss
This is a classic game that everyone can play. When played for fun players normally agree upon the rules before the game starts.
These sets can be purchased in shops and usually involve players taking it in turns to throw rope or wooden hoops over one or more spikes.
Giant Jenga
With the giant Jenga set, the aim is to build up the tower and then take turns to remove a piece from the tower and add it to the very top without making it collapse. The higher you get, the harder the game will get.
The first person to knock it down is out.
There are loads of sets online of all different sizes. Make sure you pick the one that’s right for you and you’ll be able to keep playing it for years to come.
Bean Bag Toss
Bean bag toss or “cornhole” as it is commonly known, is a game where players take turns at throwing a small bean bag at a board with a hole in it. There are points for both getting the bean bag in the hole and getting the bean bag on the board. The first person to get to 21 points wins!
You can buy these online or make them yourself. There are also lots of makeshift ways to play this game. Have a look at the DIY options online and see if you can get creative with what you already have. Remember, to keep it fair you want your bean bags to be the same size for everyone.
Bocce / Petanque
Bocce can be played in any relatively flat outdoor area. This makes your yard a perfect place for a game and you can mark off a particular patch of your lawn to use.
Bocce is played with eight large balls and one smaller target or ball which is called a pallina. There are four balls per team and they are made of a different colour or pattern to distinguish the balls of one team from those on the other team.
