Spring Lawn Tips

Spring is the kick start of the growing season for majority of turf varieties, meaning it is a very important time for all lawn lovers! The days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer and everything is starting to grow again! So there is a lot happening in your back yard and that’s why it is very important to follow these few vital hints and tips to stay on top of your lawn and keep it fighting fit for the busy season.

Fertilise:

As temperatures start to rise your soil temperatures will also increase and the lawn starts to grow again, making it an ideal time to fertilise your lawn and get it strong and healthy for the growing season. We use and recommend Sir Walter Fertiliser that is available through our lawn store, as it has been specially put together by Australia’s top turf farmers and is perfect for all lawns!

Spring Cleaning:

It’s time to give your lawn a good ol’ fashion spring clean! Just like your house your lawn needs some TLC as well. During the colder periods most lawns will experience dormancy, the slowed growth and less mowing may welcome some weeds into your lawn. So weeding will be a priority in your spring lawn care, close mowing will also assist in getting rid of some of the weeds.

Dethatching:

Various grass varieties can build up a thatch layer during the summer and winter months, so when the growing seasons returns, spring is an ideal time to give your lawn a nice close haircut to dethatch your lawn. If you have a couch lawn you will need to use a scarifying machine, which are available at most hire outlets. If you have a Buffalo lawn, like Sir Walter, you can give your lawn a very low mowing which usually reduces the buildup of thatch. Generally speaking we recommend to dethatch your lawn once a year, with spring being the ideal time to do it as the growing season has begun for the year.
